FLUVIR is an influenza neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) indicated for:

  • Treatment of acute, uncomplicated influenza A and B in patients 2 weeks of age and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours.
  • Prophylaxis of influenza A and B in patients 1 year and older.
  • Treatment of Influenza like illness (ILI)
  • Treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI)
  • FLUVIR does not prevent bacterial infections that may happen with the flu.
  • FLUVIR is not a substitute for an annual flu vaccination.
  • FLUVIR is not recommended for people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are not receiving dialysis.
  • FLUVIR is contraindicated in patients with known serious hypersensitivity to oseltamivir or any component of the product.
  • People with the flu, particularly children and adolescents, may be at an increased risk of seizure, confusion, or abnormal behavior early during their illness
  • Patients with renal impairment had higher blood levels of oseltamivir carboxylate compared to patients with normal renal function which may increase the risk of associated adverse reactions. Therefore, dosage adjustment is recommended for patients with a serum creatinine clearance between 10 and 60 mL/minute and for patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing routine hemodialysis or continuous peritoneal dialysis treatment.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. There are two main types of influenza (flu) virus: Types A and B. The influenza A and B viruses that routinely spread in people (human influenza viruses) are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year.

Initially, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. And although a cold can be a nuisance, you usually feel much worse with the flu.

Common signs and symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever over 100.4 F (38°C)
  • Aching muscles
  • Chills and sweats
  • Headache
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat

Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. A person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own eyes, mouth or nose.

Influenza can occur in any age group. People at higher risk of developing flu complications include:

  • Young children under age 5, and especially those under 12 months.
  • Adults older than age 65.
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
  • Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum.
  • People with weakened immune system.
  • People who have chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease,Kidney disease, liver disease and diabetes.
  • People who are very obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.

Most people who get the flu can treat themselves at home and often don't need to see a doctor. If you have symptoms like fever, sore throat contact your doctor right away.

If you're young and healthy, seasonal influenza usually isn't serious. Although you may feel miserable while you have it, the flu usually goes away in a week or two with no lasting effects. But children and adults at high risk may develop complications such as:

  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma/COPD flare-ups
  • Heart problems
  • Ear infections

Pneumonia is the most serious complication. For older adults and people with a chronic illness, pneumonia can be deadly.

There are 3 ways through which influenza can be prevented.

Flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses

  • While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the viruses that research indicates will be most common.
  • Flu vaccines protect against three or four viruses; an H1N1, an H3N2, and one or two influenza B viruses, depending on the vaccine.
  • Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu each year.
  • Vaccination of high risk persons is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness. Vaccination also is important for health care workers, and those who live with or care for high risk people to keep from spreading flu to high risk people.
  • Children younger than 6 months are at high risk of serious flu illness, but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for or live with them should be vaccinated to protect these babies.

Take everyday actions to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them

  • If you get the flu, antiviral drugs can treat your illness. These drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick.
  • Antiviral drugs work best when started in the first 2 days of symptoms to treat people who are very sick (such as those who are hospitalized) or people who are sick with flu symptoms and who are at increased risk of severe flu illness.
